dichotomized:

This photo from the 1870s shows a man proudly standing in front of a mountain of tens of thousands of bison skulls - an iconic American species that was systematically slaughtered by the millions as European Americans settled the west. Without the bison, the resisting tribes of the Great Plains would either be forced to leave or die of starvation.

Ron always just fucking knows

If you remember, Ron was always weirdly good with Divination. Whenever he’d joke about a possible outcome, it would eventually happen in some roundabout way!

#AU where Ron is actually a great prophet but no one fucking knows it#and when they find out#Ron is torn between being pissed as hell and thinking it’s hilarious

There’s actually a whole point about this in these Harry Potter analysis books I used to read obsessively. Two of their cardinal rules of HP foreshadowing are “Hermione is always right, except when she’s emotional” and “Ron is always wrong, except when he’s joking”. This actually plays out pretty frequently in the series if you look for it!

"Nineteen things I’ve learned before I turned nineteen.
1. Always carry $5 and a lighter with you (even if you don’t smoke).
2. Ask every person you meet how their day is going. Genuinely ask with the soul intention of learning how their day is. Ask the coffee shop employee. Ask the person next to you in line at Walmart. Ask your distant friend. Ask everyone.
3. Take many photos of yourself. Take photos of yourself when you’re happy. Take photos of yourself when you’re sad. Take photos of yourself because there are millions of trees in the world, and we all look at the same sky, but there is only one of you.
4. Stay in contact with your parents. Try not to hate them. They are the reason you have the ability to feel anything at all. Try not to hate your parents.
5. Opening your skin will not set your demons free. Open your heart. Open your mind. Open your hands.
6. Nobody knows anybody completely. That’s okay.
7. Be gentle, but be aggressive. Take a stand. Nobody hears your voice if you stay silent.
8. Respect everybody. We are all humans trying to survive. We all deserve respect.
9. Wearing black will ALWAYS make you feel better about yourself.
10. Always give tips, whether it be a couple extra dollars or a piece of mind. You never know how much you could be helping someone.
11. Change is the only thing consistent in life. Do not allow that bother you. Embrace chance and move with life, whichever direction it chooses to take you.
12. Smile often. Smile at strangers. Smile at your friends. Smile when nobody is looking and you’re alone in your bedroom. Smile when somebody is rambling to you.
13. Body image means nothing. Your body is merely just a seatbelt in the car. Your body is here to protect you. You choose the direction you go, and your body will not hold you back. Only you can hold yourself back.
14. Don’t hold grudges. Don’t allow yourself to hate anybody. Forgive them. Learn to love them for the person you never got to see them to be. Believe that a beautiful human exists in that person. Wish them well.
15. Drink orange juice. Lot’s of it.
16. Don’t allow the opinions of others to choose your destiny. We are all simply trying to live our own life.
17. Sing all the time. Sing off key. Sing in a silly voice. Sing like you’re on stage. Sing no matter who is around. Singing is breathing for the soul. Sing.
18. Take time to think. Write your feelings down. Write letters to the people you love. Texting is overrated and not as heartfelt as a nice handwritten letter.
19. Live for yourself. Breathe for yourself. Do everything in your life for nobody but you. This is your life. This is it."

"Are you the SAT because I’d do you for 3 hours and 45 minutes with a 10 minute break halfway through for snacks, and then I can stare at you for like 10 minutes and think ‘wow, I hope I don’t ruin this.’"

oh

No. U + I = 145 as the atomic number for Uranium is 92 and the atomic number for I is 53. Cause we got chemistry.

U.S. soccer player Abby Wambach is known for her diving headers, but she won’t be executing any of that signature move in the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada. For the first time, artificial turf will be used, rather than grass. Artificial turf poses significant risks of injury to players. Some soccer players have equated it to playing on concrete.
It’s probably not even necessary to note that artificial turf has never been used for major men’s soccer tournaments. “It’s a gender issue through and through,” Wambach told the New York Times.
Wambach, along with other players from around the world, have signed petitions and recently sent a letter to FIFA and the Canadian Soccer Association mentioning a possibility of legal action if the decision to use artificial turf is not reversed.
“For Wambach, celebrations usually mean a sprint to the corner flag and a double knee slide in the grass,” Juliet Macur wrote for the New York Times. “But not on turf.”

W. T. F. Honestly?!? Why are people who make these decisions (FIFA) all male anyway, it would be nice to have some adequate representation at the level where decisions are being made for women. And we deserve the same good conditions!

i played rugby on astroturf for four years. one time a girl got MRSA from a combination of turf burn and traditional hippie hygiene (her phrase, not mine, but i can tell you the way turf holds standing water and germs is very similar to an only-slightly leaky bathtub, so the fact that she showered 1.5 times a week was not the only factor in this). i have turf burn scars from playing on that field. soccer’s not as contact-with-grass-heavy as rugby, but it’s still shitty as fuck.

my teacher sent a student home today because the student had had an anxiety attack earlier in the morning and she said “if you have a broken bone, you don’t just keep walking on it and damaging it more, you treat it. Your mental health is the same. Health then school.”

I was about to get really angry but it took a different turn than I expected

The point of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

the point of pouring a shit ton of ice water over yourself is because when one suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) one of the affects the disease has is a numbness throughout the body, as well as struggling to breathe, and both these are meant to temporarily happen when doused in freezing water. It’s to raise awareness of what ALS feels like and encourage donations towards research and cures.
